Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Wednesday that Zangnan is part of China’s territory, and the Chinese government has standardized the names of some parts of Zangnan. “This is within China’s sovereign rights.”
Lin made the remarks in response to media inquiries that India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has released a statement in which it makes clear its opposition to China naming places in “Arunachal Pradesh” (China’s Zangnan), according to Chinese foreign ministry website.
China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs released the fifth batch of standardized geographical names in Zangnan on Sunday.
Following the release, India’s MEA claimed in a Wednesday statement on X calling the China’s standardization of names “vain and preposterous attempts.”
Qian Feng, director of the Research Department at the National Strategy Institute at Tsinghua University, told the Global Times that India has no right to say anything about China’s legitimate exercise of its sovereignty, and China’s action is in a manner consistent with international law. He added that the Indian side’s claim also did not align with the facts.
Previously in 2024, when answering a question related to Zangnan, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin said that the China-India boundary has never been delimited and is divided into the eastern sector, the middle sector, the western sector and Sikkim sector. Zangnan in the eastern sector has always been China’s territory. China had all along exercised effective administrative jurisdiction over Zangnan until India’s illegal occupation. This is a basic fact that cannot be denied.
In 1987, India formed the so-called “Arunachal Pradesh” on China’s territory under India’s illegal occupation. China issued a statement right then to firmly oppose it and stress that India’s move was illegal and null and void. China’s position remains unchanged, Lin said in 2024.
The fourth batch of additions to the public use of geographical names in Zangnan was released in March 2024.
