China’s Consulate-General in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday issued an urgent security alert, calling on Chinese nationals and institutions to closely monitor the evolving situation and avoid affected neighborhoods amid a large-scale police operation targeting criminal groups.

The warning came after Rio police launched extensive raids on Tuesday in several northern districts including Alemão and Penha, triggering fierce clashes that have left more than 60 people dead. Multiple major thoroughfares were paralyzed and some public transport lines were temporarily rerouted as violence spread across the city, according to the consulate’s official WeChat account. The city’s operations center, COR-Rio, also published its own emergency advisory and raised the local risk level to 2.

The Chinese Consulate-General urged Chinese nationals in its consular district to steer clear of dangerous zones, remain vigilant to official safety updates, and take shelter in secure locations if caught in an affected area, and leave as soon as conditions allow. It advised those facing emergencies to promptly call local police and contact the consulate.

Brazilian officials confirmed the severity of the ongoing crackdown. “At least 64 people have died in a massive police raid aimed at organized crime in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday,” CNN reported, citing security officials. The official added that four police officers were among the dead.

In a post on social media X on Tuesday afternoon, Rio de Janeiro State Governor Cláudio Castro pronounced the raid as “the biggest operation in the history of Rio de Janeiro,” according to CNN.
