Regarding the case recently revealing the cyberattacks and infiltration by US National Security Agency (NSA) against China’s National Time Service Center, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun on Friday strongly condemned the US government for launching intrusions on China’s critical infrastructure. “The relevant case shows the international community what the real ‘Volt Typhoon Operation’ is, and once again proves that the US is the world’s largest source of cyberattacks,” the spokesperson said.
China has recently disclosed a case involving cyberattacks and infiltration by the US NSA targeting China’s National Time Service Center. The National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China released a technical analysis report exposing the undeniable evidence of US cyberattacks on China’s critical information infrastructure.
Responding to Global Times inquiry regarding the case at Friday’s press briefing, Guo expressed strong condemnation of the US government’s cyberattacks and infiltration of China’s critical infrastructure, as well as its network pre-positioning for potential large-scale destructive actions in the future.
Guo stated that Chinese cybersecurity agencies had previously released a report clarifying that the so-called “Volt Typhoon” was, in fact, an international ransomware organization. “The case disclosed today reveals the true nature of the ‘Volt Typhoon operation’ and further proves that the US is the world’s largest source of cyberattacks,” Guo noted.
Guo emphasized that the US government’s actions are highly likely to cause misunderstandings and misjudgments, which are highly irresponsible behaviors. China urges the US to immediately cease cyberattacks on China’s critical infrastructure, adding that China will take all necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its cyber sovereignty and security.
The National Time Service Center generates, maintains, and broadcasts “Beijing Time,” providing high-precision time services for sectors such as national communications, finance, electric power, transportation, among others. Damage from a cyberattack could jeopardize the secure and stable operation of “Beijing Time,” potentially leading to severe consequences such as network communication failures, financial system disruptions, power outages, transportation paralysis, and aerospace launch. It could even throw global timekeeping into chaos, resulting in incalculable harm and losses, according to China’s Ministry of State Security.
